<description>Moon and Moss, Live Oak Grove Newcomb College Pottery Tile
ca. 1917.
Artist: Sarah Agnes Estelle &quot;Sadie&quot; Irvine, Newcomb Art School, Class of 1906

A beautiful and rare Newcomb College Pottery tile by one of the most influential and talented Newcomb artists. Sadie Irvine coined the term Moon and Moss, Live Oak Grove for any tree with moss hanging from its branches. It was a popular design that was influenced by the writings of George Washington Cable.

The H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College, the women's sister college of Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana was founded in 1886 with a one hundred thousand dollar gift from Mrs. Josephine Louise LeMonnier Newcomb in remembrance of her only child, Harriot Sophie, who died of diphtheria at 16 years of age.  Among the College's first offerings were art classes.
The faculty members of the newly-formed Newcomb Art School were brothers, William and Ellsworth Woodward, and Gertrude Roberts Smith.  The pioneering faculty used the social and educational paradigms of the British Arts and Crafts movement to institute a quasi-commercial enterprise that was associated with an academic program.  The Woodwards hoped this endeavor would show their students a career option other than teaching, and with the sale of their wares give them financial independence.  The Pottery also hoped to offer New Orleans an economic stimulus as the pieces produced were to be made of indigenous clays, decorated with indigenous motifs by women working at the Southern institution.  The one restriction put on the art students was that they could not &quot;get dirty.&quot;  The throwing, glazing and firing involved in the production of ceramics was done by professional potter, Joseph Meyer.

Sadie Irvine joined the ranks of Art Craftsmen in 1906 and remained so until 1929.  (The term &quot;art craftsman&quot; was used to identify those women who stayed at the Newcomb Pottery after graduation to work in the studio and sell their wares in the Art School Sales Room.)  In 1930, she was &quot;hired&quot; as an employee of the University and held this position until the Pottery was closed in 1940.  Sadie was appointed an instructor of ceramic art at the start of the 1940-1941 academic year; her tenure at the Newcomb Art School lasted until her retirement in 1952.  It is no exaggeration that Sadie was a virtual cornerstone of the pottery program.  She continued to contribute to art education in New Orleans by teaching at Kingsley House, then Dominican College until her death in 1970.

This tile is in excellent condition with its original frame and paper label identifying Sadie Irvine as the artist and the year 1917. Frame has wear and paint loss.

Tile: 9 7/8” x 5 5/8”
Frame: 13 3/4” x 9 7/8”
