Frame Dimensions: 27 1/2" x 38 1/4".

Wool canton and stripes with 13 double applique sewn stars and anchor (using a zig-zag stitch patented in 1889). Brass grommets. Great patina and desirable smaller size.

Framing: Flag was hand sewn to an acid free black mounting board and framed with a custom hand finished Italian sold wood molding. UV resistant acrylic and spacers encapsulate and protect the flag.

Late 19th early 20th century. Wool. Stamped on hoist " 1 Red Ensign"                                                                                      Desirable small size, hand made panel sewn construction.      The red ensign is the flag flown by British merchant ships since 1707. In 1854 the Merchant Shipping Act included a specific provision that the Red Ensign was the appropriate flag for a British merchantman. This provision was repeated in successive British shipping legislation (i.e., 1889, 1894 (section 73) and 1995).                                            Until 1864, the Red Ensign was also the principal ensign of the Royal Navy, and as such it was worn by ships of the Red Squadron of the navy, as well as by those warships that were not assigned to any squadron
